September Favorites

Starting my favorites for the month with this straw bag that I've been lugging around a lot since I got it. I didn't think I could pull off a round straw bag that I have been seeing so much of lately so I got it in this shape instead. It keeps me from toting around our entire home which is great, because that would mean no shoulder and back pain! This cute little bag can accommodate my phone, my power bank, cash and cards (wallet won't fit), and my keys.

Gold Hoop Earrings

Have you noticed that these are in vogue again? I remember buying my first pair in gold too back in 2006--towards the end of my freshman year in UP Baguio. They were exactly the same size as these new ones I got from Parfois, except this one is significantly thinner. I remember being shy about the size of the earrings having used only pearl studs so I would wear that gold pair with my hair down at first.

Tomato Mask Sheet from Nature Republic

I had a colleague who went to Korea early this month and she was kind enough to buy Tomato Mask Sheets for us there. These masks are AMAZING. They really moisturize and brighten the skin. This is hands down the best mask sheet if you want brighter skin. I use this in the evening and when I put on my moisturizer and BB cream the following day, they go on real smooth. Also! The most important reason why I absolutely love this mask: I get cystic pimplessss whenever I'm about to get my period or I've skipped a couple of steps in my skincare routine; so whenever I feel a pimple about to develop, I put this on, and in the morning it's gone. I'm not kidding. Which is why I'm stocking up on these before I run out. A friend recommended Tony Moly's Tomato Mask, too. Is that any good?

Peri's Ink Velvet in Baby Doll

I love this tint! This stays on for houuurs. I was hounding this on Beauty MNL but it's always out of stock so I was happy that it's now available at SM Makati. I love this tint. When used all over the lips it really brightens up my complexion, but I usually use this for gradient lips

L'Oreal Cushion Glow Blush in Rose Affair

I just bought this because I saw a beauty YouTuber rave about it. Before I got this, I was actually considering getting a cushion BB Cream but couldn't find one that will suit my needs so when I saw this in SM Makati, I bought it stat. I love that this has a cooling effect and it's dewy. Think, Korean girls dewy. It's really nice. The only thing I don't like about it is that I have to re-apply after four hours. The color is completely gone-- my cheeks are just left dewy. What I've been doing as of late, is to layer this with a light pink stain. It works better, although this time, the dewiness is completely gone after around six hours. I love the product, but I don't think I'd buy it again--the price for the quality is pretty surprising, too. It's P900.

Gone Gold

{Gaucho Pants, Uniqlo | Straw Bag, Fievre}

Or mustard. If you want to technical about it. But in the sun these pants look gold. I love, love, love these gaucho pants from Uniqlo. These are the comfiest pair of pants I own. I actually bought this in navy first, then loved that pair so much so I bought these gold ones (or mustard) as well. I think I found out about these pants too late so they've run out of black in my size :( They have it in white, but the material was way too thin for my liking. I hope they made a thick lining for the white pair. These are garterized (!!!) and fall exactly around my waist. The material is buttery soft and is surprisingly cool even in the heat.

What do you think of these pants? :)

How To: Clean Jewelry

My Mom and my grandmother had trust issues cleaned their jewelry themselves. Whenever I would need to borrow a pair of earrings from my Mom, she would clean them herself using powder laundry detergent--Tide at that. According to her, that's how my Grandmother cleaned hers too.

When I started buying my own jewelry, I never bothered to clean them (HEHE), except for my engagement ring which I brought to have cleaned professionally. While I was at the jewelry store, the person cleaning told me I could clean the ring myself-- WITH TIDE. The store didn't even bother to charge me with a fixed amount, i just gave him a tip.

I asked the clerk how it's done, and to my surprise, his instructions were the same as my Mom's.

No. 1 : Mix warm water with powder laundry detergent (Tide was highly recommended). Keep jewelry soaked for 20 to 30 minutes (though my Mom likes to keep hers overnight).

No. 2 : Rinse jewelry, make sure you cover the drain with a dish so your jewelry won't fall in!

No. 3 : Brush jewelry with a toothbrush. Then rinse again.

No. 4 : Air dry on a paper towel.

You'd be surprised at how sparkly your jewelry will be!

Checked Blazer

I'm perennially cold so I'm pretty happy that blazers are a thing again, especially checked / houndstooth blazers. I've never been one for patterns, but since these are just in black and white, I was down. I got this blazer from Stradivarius for P1995. I was hesitant at first, but since my husband gave me a push and told me that he thinks I can use this for many years, I went ahead and got it. I've already worn this to work, and I'm pretty happy I can pair this with a casual outfit as well.

I've blogged about my sunnies and earrings HERE. I'd love to know your thoughts on the checked blazer! Let me know in the comments section below.

How To: Gradient Lips

FIRST OF ALL, MAY I JUST SAY, I HAVE A NEWFOUND RESPECT FOR BEAUTY BLOGGERS AS THIS SHIT'S HARD.

I spent close to an hour taking photos for this Gradient Lips post-- and a gazillion hours editing. I first used Kevin's SLR and boy did that burst my self-esteem. Gird your loins if you'll make a beauty post with an SLR-- it's gonna show every flaw. So I used our Sony Point and Shoot instead. Still flawed AF, but less harsh and also less heavy for taking the necessary selfies for this post.

The album for this post has 92 photos. Seriously. Making a beauty how to is tough.

Anyway, I've been on the Gradient Lips trend for a while now and I really like it. Some people would use a concealer for their base (I STILL DON'T HAVE ONE, CAN SOMEONE SUGGEST A GOOD ONE FOR OILY SKIN?), but I prefer nude lipsticks.

{Tools of the Trade}

Products I used for this Gradient Lips Tutorial

Procedure

One and Two: Put on one swipe of your chosen base. I dabbed on the Maybelline Matte in Nude Embrace to cancel out the Coral undertones of the Happy Skin Lipstick.

Three: Dab the tint on the center of your lips.

Four: Blend outwards using your finger or a cotton bud.

Optional: You can put lip gloss on the center of your lips (at the area where tint is darkest) if you don't want the too matte look.

I'd like to know your thoughts on this beauty tutorial! Let me know in the Comments Section below!

Ten Things We Learned from Planning the Wedding

Getting married in the Philippines (or is it just in Manila?) is a real extravaganza. It's so easy to get caught up, go balls to the wall, for that once in a lifetime event. Kevin and I wanted to have a small celebration with our families and closest friends I wanted a low-key wedding in Baguio where we met with just our immediate families so we had a plan of having a hundred in our guest list (A HUNDRED IS INTIMATE IN THE PHILIPPINES/MANILA), but that swelled up to 120 (BUT ONLY 102 CAME. RSVP IS A BITCH IN THIS COUNTRY). Even with a small wedding, we were surprised at how much preparation had to go into it. Allow us to step back and recount some of the things we learned from planning our wedding, and hopefully these could be helpful to those who are planning their wedding:

1. The Coordinators are Worth It.

In the early stages of our wedding planning, Fran insisted on having a specific wedding coordinator, which she says would be instrumental in the success of our wedding. Not knowing anything about what wedding coordinators do, I initially pushed back, but decided that it would be best to defer to her on this decision as she probably had a lot of research done anyway.

Fast forward to our wedding day, and I cannot overstate how instrumental they were in keeping the ‘machine’ going. They had the process down to a T, and gave us the peace of mind to not worry about anything in terms of the arrangements (shoutout to Imbitado Events). They were like the little elves in Santa’s shop. They work behind the scenes, and made sure that everything went smoothly, from the payments, to the logistics, to the timing of the event. This was probably one of our (or Fran’s) best decisions with the wedding.

2. Choose a Photographer and Videographer you have chemistry with.

This makes a lot of sense as the photos and videos will be something that you and your family will look back on, so you’d like for it to capture the moment as you envisioned it. We first filtered out options on our photographer and videographer based on their aesthetic, and price, but meeting with them was equally crucial to see if the vibe was right. True enough, we selected very friendly, patient, and talented people who made us comfortable and gave us great direction. We are really happy with our choices, and this was reflected in their final product.

3. Don't be afraid to be assertive on what you want.

Remember, that this is your wedding day, and it has to make you and your spouse happy, and not anyone else. Be sure to be clear with what you want, and not get pressured by what others want or expect. You’ll feel much more comfortable on the day, and the process will be much more enjoyable. Plus, your suppliers are complete pros, and they know that they are there to help you. Engage them, and get their opinions, but make sure that your needs are met should be priority number one.

4. Set up an excel sheet to monitor your budget (See Fran's No. 1)

This is just me being extremely careful about the budget, setting up an excel file which tracks details on payment, contracts, and your budget will help guide you along the way. With large expenses, and multiple vendors, you’d want to keep track of everything just to ensure that you are organized. This goes a long way in helping with your sanity too! (FRAN: THAT SANITY BIT IS MORE FOR KEVIN)

5. Don't get pressured into inviting guests you don't want at your wedding.

This was something I was extremely adamant about. I didn’t want people in my wedding who I didn’t know, as I felt that this was a moment I wanted to share with only my close circle of family and friends. Sure, concessions had to be made (I didn’t know so many people cared about me, *rolls eyes*), but overall, the wedding was a fun experience because we were in the presence of people who truly knew our story and who genuinely wanted to be there. There was also a fair bit of self-selection going on as we had a destination wedding, and we knew by making everyone travel, that they actually wanted to be there.

1. Budget will balloon.

Prior to our engagement, I had several acquaintances who had gotten married and who had been upfront about their wedding budget. So when Kevin set our initial budget, I scoffed (on the inside). I brought him to a wedding fair so he would have an idea on how much wedding things would cost and he could get a more realistic (hehe) assessment on a wedding budget.

The pricing schemes of suppliers can be tricky-- we had a pretty long engagement (a year and four months) and the thing with suppliers in the Philippines is they increase their prices every year. So we would find one supplier, not book them yet, and then come New Year they've increased their prices. So you can just imagine the budging in our Excel sheet (and Kevin's mood).

Also, you will find that towards the end of the wedding planning you'll be adding bits to your wedding that seem small, but will actually have a dent on your budget (See Also My No. 5). Like at the last minute you would want to give your bridesmaids robes, or initially you wanted to go with earrings from your Mom, but then you decide you'll buy a pair instead (GUILTYYYYY).

2. Consider Additional Fees.

We had a destination wedding (not on purpose). We booked our Photo and Video(PV) team and my Hair and Makeup Artist (HMUA) before we found our venue which was in Alfonso, Cavite. Since the PV and HMUA were based in Manila, they required Out of Town Fees (OOTF) and though their respective OOTF  might seem reasonable, they add up and make a sizable dent.

In order to avoid OOTF if you are having a destination wedding, do your research and find suppliers that are based in the area where you will be getting married. Not only will this save you from OOTF or even Accommodation Fees, suppliers from the area will of course be more familiar with the location and could also recommend other suppliers that are from the area.

3. Go to Wedding Fairs.

These are chaotic. So chaotic in fact that Kevin only went with me twice; my Mom, twice (when I told her I'd go to another one she got upset); and my brother once--when I asked him to go with me to another one he legit whimpered. Then got upset.

People at booths will be ramming your hands with fliers, and even though they've seen you twice already, they don't care, you will get another flier.

Before attending a wedding fair (most are free you just have to register in advance), do your research on suppliers that will be there. OR hound the suppliers you're eyeing and then monitor which fairs they will be joining. The freebies at wedding fairs are pretty good. In our case, the best deal we got was with our Caterer. They waived a bunch of fees and we got A TON OF FREEBIES.

4. Accept Help.

I wanted to be so hands on with the wedding planning and I did not want to inconvenience my family or friends that I shied away from accepting help. I wanted to do everything and that just made me so stressed. Towards the end of the wedding planning I was so cranky and took out the stress on family and Kevin. Luckily, my parents saw through it and offered to help me out with some things when I was already pressed for time. My brother even became my de facto Maid of Honor.

Your wedding is a lifetime event and it can get so absorbed into micro-managing everything, but if someone offers help, learn to relax and accept their offer.

5. Sometimes it's good to step back from Pinterest.

Our wedding did not have a theme, but we knew what we wanted. I wanted just white flowers and lots of greenery--which luckily, Kevin wanted as well. All other elements were muted--we just did not want color and we wanted a lot of trees and white flowers.

So when I caved and resorted to Pinterest for some design ideas for our florist and reception stylist, I did not go crazy and pinned everything that looks nice.

Pinterest is a trap that will make you ram everything in to your wedding. It's chock-full of ideas that could easily lead one into adding more and more elements into the wedding, which could eventually lead to your budget growing.

Zero in on what you want as a couple, keep your budget in mind, and have someone you can bounce ideas off of. I was lucky that Kevin was hands on with the wedding too and when I was piling ideas on, he was quick enough to filter.

It's nice to have a Pinterest-worthy wedding, but learn to work within your budget.

One last tip-- enjoy your wedding day because it's going to go by so fast!

and Kevin!

Bright Round Things (An H&M Haul... Kind Of)

1. Round Brown Sunnies

Finally got a pair! I've been going back and forth with regard to getting round sunnies. The Ray-Ban ones are pricey and since I'm not sure I'll still wear it many years after I purchase it, I thought I'd just scrimp on a pair.

What I really planned on getting was the round sunnies from Mango, priced at P1495. I made a mental note to return to their branch at the SM Mall of Asia, but I never got to! Luckily too since over the weekend I saw this pair (very very similar to the ones from Mango) and got it for P599! or was it P699...

2. Round Gold Earrings

I saw the very same pair on a vlogger from the UK. I wasn't sure if I they have this here in Manila, but I went to SM Makati anyway and after 10 minutes at looking at their earrings and Sale racks-- I found them! A few pairs were hidden under the new earrings display! I'm so happy with this find (I'm wearing them now as I'm preparing this post).

I don't really like dangling earrings but these don't hang too low from my ears so I'm fine. For many, many years pearl earrings were my staple. But with the face like the shape of the full moon, and ears set far back, pearl studs weren't really flattering unless they're huge or I keep tilting my face to the side. So these are now my staples. I got these for P299.

What are your thoughts on my mini accessory haul?

Office Layers

{Top, Zalora | Bambi Dress, Blued from Zalora | Custom-made shoes, Kara Zapatos}

My first foray into Civil Service was at the Department of Foreign Affairs Manila. During our orientation, the unspoken dress code stuck to my mind. Blacks and Blues were preferred over color. Dress smart and properly as you don't know who you will be running into in the building.

I was at the Training and Research Arm and my work entailed constantly talking to other people-- so that means I have to look presentable all the time.

I brought that dress code to the Senate. Sometimes I'd wear a sleeveless top or dress, but I make sure that I have a shawl to cover up when necessary or when it gets too cold.

I bought this printed spaghetti strap dress from Zalora and since summer has gone, I thought it would be a waste to just store this in my closet until another extra hot day (In the ber months? It's possible in Manila...). Soooo enter this versatile chiffon top also from Zalora. The chiffon top is flimsy enough to tuck into the dress without the unnecessary and unflattering bulges, and smartens up my attire for the office.
